Chinese New Year, the most important festival in the Chinese calendar, was celebrated in the Principality on 11 February during an exceptional evening organised by the Monegasque association ‘Monaco-China’ with the support of the Monegasque Embassy in China.
Among the hundred or so guests were several prominent figures and representatives of Monegasque and Chinese diplomacy, reflecting the good bilateral relations between the two countries, which will celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2025.
To mark the transition to the Year of the Fire Horse, heralding a year full of dynamism and creative energy, conducive to change and resolutely focused on action, Chinese cultural traditions were honoured.
A specially prepared Asian-inspired dinner was accompanied by a series of traditional entertainment, including lion dances, calligraphy demonstrations and Guzheng (Chinese zither) music.
But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the wonderful surprise prepared for the guests by the Mandarin students at Charles III College and Albert I High School.
Highly involved, prepared and supervised by their teachers, more than 90 of them, from the youngest in Year 7 to the oldest in Year 13, played an active role in the evening's entertainment!
To the strains of popular Chinese music, they performed songs and dances emblematic of Chinese culture with great dedication, energy and success, through a variety of contemporary scenes, perfectly staged, including a very graceful fan dance and an impeccable demonstration of Tai Chi!
Thanks to them, this Chinese New Year's Eve celebration was a beautiful symbol of the ties forged between Monaco and China, and an elegant and joyful demonstration of the bridges built between the two cultures.
